80 Years of "Powering Your Financial Success"

At Powerco Federal Credit Union, we’re proud of our old age. We celebrated 80 years of “Powering Your Financial Success” in 2015.

As Powerco emerged as a fledgling credit union, it was amidst some historical headlines. It was the year that Babe Ruth swung his bat the final tiPowering Your Financial Success Since 1935me before entering retirement at age 40. Hasbro began selling its still popular Monopoly game. It was the year of Black Sunday and the year the Dust Bowl ravaged the Midwest. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt launched the New Deal and built a gold vault at Fort Knox. The first Penguin book was published, ushering in the age of paperbacks. The Social Security Act became law and the Great Depression weighed heavily upon the nation. The Nuremburg laws were passed, signaling the gathering of war clouds. The year of 1935 brought the invention of nylon, the debut of the Gallop Poll and the first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The average cost of a new house was $3,450 and the average wages were $1,600 per year. A gallon of gas was just 10 cents and a pound of hamburger meat was 11 cents. The average price of a new car was $625. In 1935, news headlines told of bank runs and a 22% unemployment rate. It was a time when many couldn’t get credit, or if they could find a loan it might be a whopping 1000% interest rate. It was during that time that Powerco formed, offering its members a better financial future. Since then, Powerco has continued to power the financial success of its membership and is proud to have served (and continues to serve) generations of families.

A lot has changed since our humble beginnings but the commitment to our membership has remained the same.
