85, Striving, & Thriving!

They say hindsight is 20/20.

As we take a look back at how we've grown over the past 85 years, we're also envisioning 2020 to be a year of fantastic growth and opportunity for our membership.

We're working to make our foresight 20/20.

Powerco has grown tremendously since it emerged as a fledgling credit union in 1935. We'll mark this anniversary year with innovative new products, services, loans and promotions. Members will see record growth in 2020 as we celebrate "85, Striving & Thriving."85 Years of Service 1935 - 2020

A bit of 2020 hindsight:

  • When Powerco Federal Credit Union chartered in 1935, it was amidst some historical headlines.
  • It was the year that Babe Ruth swung his bat the final time before entering retirement at age 40.
  • Hasbro began selling its still popular Monopoly game.
  • It was the year of Black Sunday and the year the Dust Bowl ravaged the Midwest.
  • President Franklin Delano Roosevelt launched the New Deal and built a gold vault at Fort Knox.
  • The first Penguin book was published, ushering in the age of paperbacks.
  • The Social Security Act became law and the Great Depression weighed heavily upon the nation.
  • The Nuremburg laws were passed, signaling the gathering of war clouds.
  • The year of 1935 brought the invention of nylon and the debut of the Gallop Poll.

The average cost of a new house was $3,450 and the average wages were $1,600 per year. A gallon of gas was just 10 cents and a pound of hamburger meat was 11 cents. The average price of a new car was $625. In 1935, news headlines told of bank runs and a 22% unemployment rate. It was a time when many couldn’t get credit, or if they could find a loan it might be a whopping 1000% interest rate. It was during that time that Powerco formed, offering its members a better financial future. Since then, Powerco has continued to power the financial success of its membership and is proud to have served (and continues to serve) generations of families.

A lot has changed since our humble beginnings but the commitment to our membership has remained the same.
